Dartmouth Faces A Challenge In Penn Receivers

PHILADELPHIA – Groundhog Day takes place in the western part of Pennsylvania, but you can excuse Penn wide receiver Jared Richardson if he felt a little like Bill Murray the last time he faced Dartmouth. Two years ago the 6-foot-2, 220-pound Richardson came into the annual Ivy League opener against the Big Green averaging 9.5  catches and 100.5 yards per game. He finished the game with two receptions for 18 yards and the Quakers lost by three points. Last October Richardson came into the Ivy League opener against the Big Green averaging 97.5 yards and 5.5 catches per game. He finished the game with two receptions for 18 yards and the Quakers lost by three points. Two years, two identical games for the pro prospect, and two three-point losses.  Dartmouth gets a third look at Richardson in Philadelphia Saturday when the 2-0 Big Green visit the 1-1 Quakers. Thanks to a 12-catch, 141-yard outing in last week’s 44-30 loss at No. 9/10 Lehigh, Richardson enters this year’s Ivy opener...

Fearful Forecast Ahead Of Week 3

The Forecast went 5-2 last week with Patriot League teams responsible for the two losses. Having watched Lafayette dominate Columbia, and given how Princeton stumbled against San Diego, it seemed to make sense to pick the Leopards over Princeton. The operative word in that sentence: seemed. But rather than blame Lafayette, let's give credit to Princeton, which bounced back nicely from the collapse against San Diego in the opener. Picking Holy Cross over Fordham also seemed the right play. There’s that word again. Yes, the Crusaders were winless but they lost by just three points at FBS Northern Illinois, by three at New Hampshire on a field goal with no time left, and by two at then-No. 6 Rhode Island. OK, they didn’t play well at Yale, but of course they’d handle a Fordham team that had lost to FCS teams by 21, 23 and 23 points, and to Boston College by 56, right? Wrong. There are five current or future Patriot League teams in games the Forecast is picking this week, and ...

The Optimist-The Pessimist After Central Connecticut

Image
Tired of waiting for the other guy, The Optimist is about to place his order when the door opens and The Pessimist ambles to their usual table. The Optimist: After two wins over two playoff teams in two weeks I was starting to wonder if you were even going to show. The Pessimist: Remember what the former women’s basketball coach said when she returned to Dartmouth after coaching at Fordham? The Optimist: Remind me. The Pessimist: She said the biggest difference between coaching in the Bronx and coaching in Hanover is, it’s easier to find parking in the Bronx. The Optimist: That’s pretty funny. I guess we’ll find out about that in three weeks when we put a 4-0 record on the line at Fordham. The Pessimist: You don’t waste any time, do you? The Optimist: Back to my original point, two wins over two playoff teams. You can’t do much better than that. The Pessimist: Actually, you can. Both of those games came down to the final minute, and in games like that it’s really a t...
